The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has received an order from the city of Copenhagen to install around 1,500 new pay and display machines in the Danish capital. The final customer is Parkering København, the municipal operating company. The machines are part of a comprehensive parking-space management concept which is intended to reduce car traffic and congestion in the inner city. The order is worth around US$12 million.

In order to counter the increasing amount of traffic in Copenhagen, parking zones were established in the city center in 1990. The parking fees in each case are based on the distance from the center of town. By the middle of 2007, additional inner-city districts will be incorporated in the zone system. The aim is to reduce car traffic and, as a result, to lower exhaust emissions and noise pollution as well. Road safety will also be improved as a result of these measures.

Siemens will be delivering around 1,500 pay and display machines based on the Sity type of machine. A design that is intended to fit in harmoniously with the cityscape has been specially developed for Copenhagen. Power will be supplied by distributed photovoltaic panels. Each pay and display machine will have a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) module. This will enable the online transfer of information on parking-space occupancy as well as status and operating data such as how much ticket paper and cash are in the machines to the control center of Parkering København. Apart from coins, the machines accept credit cards and the "Dankort" national debit card, whose validity can also be checked online. For monitoring and operation of the pay and display machines, Siemens will install a back-office system. Siemens is also responsible for removal of the 650 old pay and display machines.
