Migros has decided on an innovative solution for its Migros supermarket in Eschenbach in the Swiss Canton of St. Gallen: nearly 18,000 high-power Golden Dragon LEDs with modern thin film chip technology from OSRAM now bathe the entire shop in fresh daylight white (4,700 Kelvin) and cold white (5,400 Kelvin) light. The bright, stimulating light is perceived by both staff and customers to create a positive atmosphere. Moreover, the clear lighting with pure, white light in most product sectors is seen to optimise the product presentation.

Consequently, the display shelves, cooling cabinets and freezer units were also fitted with these new light sources to provide two advantages: in the fresh produce sector, from milk and meat to fruit and vegetables, along with vacuum-packed goods, the products can be accentuated much more effectively than with conventional lighting solutions. Since LEDs do not emit infrared or UV light, there is no risk of accelerated spoilage of the products. Consequently, the light sources can be positioned a great deal closer to the shelves.

The products in the cooling cabinets and freezer units are presented in an optimal light after only a few hundredths of a second: due to their instant start capability, the lamps instantaneously produce the required light colour and maximum brightness.

Long-lasting and environmentally friendly
The long life of the LEDs - up to 50,000 hours for white light and up to 100,000 hours for coloured LEDs - together with their rather low maintenance requirement makes these light sources a particularly economical solution. "Even when using the light for ten hours a day over six days a week, the average life of a white LED is 16 years," explains Markus Vetterli from OSRAM, Switzerland. Thus, these light sources are exceptionally reliable and robust.

Customised lighting
The solution opted for includes 107 Chiara panel luminaires from se Light¬management AG with wide-beam lenses, each fitted with 140 high-power LEDs from OSRAM. 22 Estrella double spots are used for the systematic lighting of specific sales areas. These are provided with two adjustable spots, each fitted with 40 LEDs. Along the display shelves, the designers used 37 LED bars with 30 LEDs per metre. To ensure natural lighting in the vegetable and fruit sector and for the meat and cold cuts, the white LEDs were mixed with red or green variants.

By using coloured light sources with colours to harmonise with the products to be presented, the human eye perceives food colours as particularly true to nature.
