Ibrahim Mohammed Ibrahim.

The paper talks about the coastal environment of Dubai as a dynamic coastal zone; an overview of Coastal Management Section of Dubai Municipality; the monitoring programme, which covers waves, water levels, currents, and bathymetry; numerical modelling programme, which caters to waves, water levels, currents, sediment transport and morphological changes, the use of monitoring and numerical modelling as design, assessment and management tools; in addition to the existing Coastal Zone Management legislation; NOC procedures and data provision; and the updated management guidelines and recommendations recently developed for the management of the coastal zone of Dubai.

Dubai Municipality presents two papers at Coastal Structures 2007 conference in Venice.

The second paper of Dubai Municipality in the conference titled, "Design and construction methodology of a novel multi-function artificial reef for Dubai" discusses the design and construction methodology of a multi-function artificial reef aimed at coastal protection, with the added consideration of its amenity value for surfing.

The three day conference was organized with the aim of bringing together engineers and scholars specialising in coastal structures from all over the world to exchange information on technical advances and to discuss progress in the related sciences. The conference is the fifth in a series that highlight significant progress in coastal structure innovation, design and construction. The first coastal structure conference was held in Alexandria-Virginia in 1979. Proceedings of these conferences yielded milestone works, frequently cited references in the field.

This year's program offers some 260 contributions - covering all aspects of research, design, construction, and maintenance of coastal structures that have been reviewed and selected for presentation. Coastal structures are undergoing renewal and innovation to better serve the needs of the society - from environmental co-existence and habitat enhancement to risk management. New up to date topics, such as tsunamis and storm surge defences, climate change, piled coastal structures and ecological issues are being deliberated in the conference.
