Osram was awarded the German Sustainability Prize on 5 December for its large product portfolio of energy efficient products and its exceptional research and development performance in this field. Taking place for the first time this year, this prize was awarded under the patronage of the German Federal President Horst Köhler in the 'Products' category.

Osram offers the largest range of energy efficient lighting products in the world.

“We are very happy about this award and are proud to have received recognition for our commitment to the field of energy efficient lighting products, not only with the German Prize for the Future in 2007, but now with the German Sustainability Prize in 2008”, says Martin Goetzeler, Osram CEO.

The new German Sustainability Prize recognises businesses that combine exemplary economic success with social responsibility and environmental protection, and act in a sustainable manner to increase business growth. “As one of the world’s leading lighting manufacturers, an intelligent, responsible approach to the environment is not just a part of our firm’s image, it is also the only way forward”, explains Goetzeler. “Today energy efficient products make up over 60 percent of Osram's turnover and we want to increase this share to 80 percent within the next ten years.”

The jury based its decision on the consistent use of sustainability management and high impact brand communication on sustainability issues. The far reaching initiative has the support of a number of stakeholders from associations, NGOs, businesses and various federal ministries, such as the Federal Environment Ministry, Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade, the German Council for Sustainable Development, the Markenverband, VDI Technology Centre and others.

The top international management advisers AT Kearney analysed how far the value chain of the prize-winning firms fulfilled environmental, economical and social sustainability criteria. Around 350 firms entered the competition, many of which were international businesses and more than half of which were DAX 30 firms.
