The Danish carpet producer egetæpper a/s has developed a new carpet collection, Barcode Econyl 70 modular, based on sustainable principles and simple lines. With a content of minimum 70% recycled material, ege has created a carpet concept that enables for architects, designers and decision-makers to choose green design with a clear conscience for the floor when designing the interior of business premises.

New sustainable carpet concept from ege.

Waste yarn becomes a new collection
The recycled material for the new collection comes from ege’s own production at the company’s three factories in Herning, Gram and Vejle. Every year the company produces more than 7 million sq m of carpet. This means that a lot of waste yarn is produced every week. Instead of disposing of this yarn, the company and the fibre producer Aquafil have found a way in which the waste yarn can be reused in the company’s own products. The result is the new Barcode Econyl 70 modular carpet concept.

On account of the high content of recycled material, the new concept is also able to reduce the energy required for production of the yarn by more than 50%.

“It was essential for us to create a collection that is green, sustainable and produced under the right conditions. At ege we have been working systematically for a number of years to reduce the impact we have on the environment. Barcode Econyl 70 is sustainable in that a large part of the product consists of recycled material. As a result less energy is required for production and the collection offers considerable benefits to users,” says ege’s Product Development Manager, Steen Bjørn.

Consideration for the environment and indoor climate
The new carpet tiles are therefore also produced with ege’s patented, environmentally-friendly MOD750 backing, made of 100% textile. This means that the carpet tile backing does not contain PVC or bitumen. The collection is also approved in accordance with the Danish Indoor Climate Labelling (DICL) scheme. This guarantees that the tiles meet the standards of the voluntary labelling scheme laid down by the Danish Technological Institute to improve the indoor climate of buildings.

Green design with sound properties
Despite a high content of recycled material, Barcode Econyl 70 does not compromise on product properties and design.

“The collection consists of 12 different colour combinations designed with a dark base combined with modern, prominent stripes reminiscent of the strict lines familiar from barcodes. Together, the colours and patterns in the collection create a minimalist look. The tiles can be used to create modern rooms with character, in terms of both design and environment,” says Steen Bjørn.

ege expects Barcode Econyl 70 to suit large companies, office environments, exclusive stores, architects, designers and others who support sustainable design and therefore deliberately choose sustainable products, where possible.
