Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) concluded Tuesday September 29 its 9th community lecture for the year at the Emarat Atrium Building, Dubai, with discussions focusing on the subject "Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) in the UAE." The lecture provided insights on the properties, uses and health effects of ACMs, and introduced to the participants various types of asbestos.

The lecture noted that there remains a substantial risk of exposure to asbestos because of the heavy presence of ACMs, particularly on account of the massive construction activities. Statistics reveal that in 2007 alone, more than 17,000 tonnes of asbestos was imported into the country for the manufacture of asbestos cement pipes, which are being used in sewerage systems.

Furthermore, the lecture explained that asbestos can lead to a number of diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer, while asbestos-related diseases have been responsible for almost 100,000 deaths annually worldwide. Those who have been identified to have the highest risk of exposure include construction workers involved in demolition and refurbishment activities, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. Women and children are also at risk through contaminated clothing and second-hand exposure.

Charles Faulkner, Consultant for WSP Environment and Energy Middle East, who was the speaker at the lecture said,” With continuous use of ACMs on a large scale in the construction sector, it is expected to increase with the number of illnesses related to asbestos. As such, new policies should be set in place to enforce the ban on all kinds of ACMs, while safer alternative materials must be identified to encourage construction firms and companies dealing with this substance to refrain from using ACMs."

Habiba Al Maraashi, Chairperson, EEG, said, "Many people still do not realise the tangible threats posed by asbestos to their health and the welfare of the entire society. The lecture was a significant step in our efforts to draw the public's attention towards the risks related to asbestos exposure and to create awareness about the efforts being undertaken to reduce the negative impact of ACMs."

The community lecture is EEG’s free public service on pressing environmental issues and concerns. It is attended by people from different backgrounds and orientations but having a common concern for the environment.
