The UAE’s exhibitions business is working with the country’s retail and hospitality industry to recover from the effects of the global financial downturn, say the organisers of a major trade show taking place in Dubai next month.

According to reports, retail sales in Dubai fell around 30 percent in the first part of 2009 because of the financial crisis. Luxury items have seen sales slide by 45 percent. Tourist numbers have fallen, and domestic spending has also reduced drastically. It has also been reported that retail gold sales in Dubai fell around 40 per cent last month, compared to the same period last year.

Thousands of exhibitors and buyers pour into the country on a weekly basis throughout the year to attend trade shows, and event organisers Streamline Marketing Group are partnering with local retailers in November to capitalise on the spending power they bring with them.

Visitors to the Big 5 PMV taking place at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 23-26 November can benefit from special retail offers negotiated by the show organisers with retailers at The Dubai Mall and Jumeirah Emirates Towers.

“The retail and hospitality industry faced a difficult year due to the economic downturn, and the major malls and hotel groups are doing what they can to win back customers,” said Nick Webb, Director of Streamline Marketing Group. “But as event organisers bringing thousands of visitors into the country, we can also play our part.

“Exhibitors and trade buyers who attend our shows are all potential customers for local retailers and we’ve looked at ways to attract them into retail outlets while they’re here, rather than seeing them head straight back to their hotel from the exhibition floor to order room service. Big 5 PMV exhibitors and visitors can benefit from fantastic discounts, and at the same time, they’re giving local retailers a boost.”

The Middle East’s leading event for plant, construction machinery, equipment and vehicles, the Big 5 PMV runs alongside the Big 5, the region’s most influential construction and contracting event.

During the exhibition dates, select retailers at The Dubai Mall will be offering attractive discounts to Big 5 PMV exhibitor and visitor badge holders, and Jumeirah Emirates Towers will be offering a 30 per cent discount on food at their restaurants. Shuttle buses will carry exhibitors and visitors to The Dubai Mall, and will also be available for transportation between the Financial Centre and Al Jafiliya Dubai Metro stations and the exhibition venue.

Big 5 PMV visitors can also submit their business cards for the chance to win a Seawings Pearl flight, or an Audi TTS track experience at the Dubai Autodrome.

Strategically located within the Middle East’s leading trading hub, the Big 5 PMV is one of the most significant events for contractors and developers from the UAE and the GCC, looking to meet suppliers from all over the world.
