Al Ain Zoo has participated in the prestigious LivCom Awards 2011, which were held from October 27 to 31, 2011 in Songpa, South Korea. Being part of a delegation from Al Ain City, the zoo presented its ambitious expansion project called Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort.

The objective of the Project Awards is to recognise innovative projects that demonstrate sustainability and environmental awareness, and have a positive impact on the local community and environment.

Following a successful pre-qualification by the awards committee earlier this year, the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort project was short-listed together with 63 other international projects to attend the Finals in South Korea.

Due to the magnitude and complexity of the expansion project, Al Ain Zoo was one of the few finalists in the ‘socio-economic’ category that were able to address all six judging criteria comprehensively and with an equal weighting. Awards criteria included: 1. Enhancement of the Natural and Built Landscape, 2. Arts, Culture & Heritage, 3. Environmental Best Practices, 4. Community Participation and Empowerment, 5. Healthy Lifestyle, and 6. Strategic Planning.

HE Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Director General of Al Ain Zoo, commented:

“We are delighted and proud to have participated in this prestigious, international Projects Award. The expansion project of Al Ain Zoo is considered by our community as the pride of Al Ain, and attending the finals in Korea is further testimony for the magnitude and complexity of our development which will provide a new, healthy lifestyle for human beings, wildlife and horticulture. Furthermore, it is a socio-economic driver for Al Ain as a city, and fully aligned with the strategic direction of the Abu Dhabi Government as set in the 2030 Vision.”

The LivCom Awards were launched in 1997 and are endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The LivCom Awards is the World’s only Awards competition focussing on International Best Practice regarding the management of the local environment. The objective of LivCom is to develop and share International Best Practice, with the further objective of improving the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of ‘liveable communities’.

Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort has been planned and designed as a full-service, world-class living community. The development occupies a 9 million sq m site that will include the iconic Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, adventurous safaris with Arabian, African and Asian desert habitats, a walking zoo, a Research Centre for breeding and conservation, a mixed-use commercial complex, resort and residential villas, two hotels, a staff village and supporting infrastructure, transportation and parking facilities. The project will be developed in phases; Phase 1 is currently under construction and will be completed in 2013.

The project focuses on environmental sustainability, preservation and conservation, education awareness, sustainable community and a business framework that will facilitate the creation and ongoing success of a busy thriving community.
