What happens when you give a Russian artist free rein to create carpet design? The result is presented in ege carpets’ new collection Dark Water, which by means of inky black underwater creatures and mystery creates a universe on carpets which stands out from anything the Danish carpet manufacturer has produced in the past.

With Dark Water, ege carpets launches a collection of designs created without regard for customary limitations, restrictions and conventions, taking instead its starting point in the imagination of a young artist.

Magical carpet designs sketched by hand
The design brief from ege carpets was simple: “Create your own carpet collection – without limitations”. Using no digital tools and with nothing but a black pen in his hand, the Russian artist and designer Kirill Rozhkov has created a striking, mythological universe which is dramatically distinct from traditional carpet production.

“The Dark Water designs are inspired by the magical world and the mystical creatures found in deep waters. ege carpets allowed me to let my imagination run wild. So, guided by my imagination, I sketched the four designs in the collection by hand. It is a technique almost forgotten in this new, digital world. It was a fantastic process, having the freedom to dive into the details of the motives”, creator of the collection Kirill Rozhkov explains. He hopes that the collection will inspire people to think out of the box and create unique interiors.

Art is part of the corporate culture at ege carpets
For many years, cooperation between the arts and the business community has played a special role in the corporate culture at ege carpets.

”Cooperation between creative and passionate people like artists and designers on designing and producing carpets allows us to find new possibilities for our carpets. We aim to be at the leading edge of the market, and we regard our working relationship with the arts as valuable inspiration which helps us to create groundbreaking design”, explains CEO Svend Aage Færch Nielsen.

A healthy provocation
Since way back in the 1950s, the Danish carpet manufacturer has collaborated with both internationally-renowned and unknown artists and designers, among others Michael Kvium, Robert Jacobsen, Monica Ritterband, Conran & Partners, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix and Marco Piva.

”ege carpets has a longstanding tradition for challenging traditional carpet production in our meeting with the arts. Each new artistic collaboration imprints valuable impressions and ideas in our organisation. It is a healthy provocation which forces us to think along new lines”, Svend Aage Færch Nielsen explains.

Advanced technology makes the impossible possible
By tradition, ege carpets applies the latest technology to the company’s carpet production. The company runs one of the industry’s most advanced plants for dyeing textile floor coverings. The plant makes it possible to reproduce bespoke designs on carpets, including the detailed designs in the Dark Water collection.
