EPIC Green Solutions, a UAE-based international water management solutions company specialising in highly-efficient sub-surface irrigation and drainage systems, was awarded the accolade for the Most Innovative Use/Application of Technology at the H2O Water Awards, which took place on Wednesday, 23rd November, at the Atlantis Hotel, The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

The H2O Water Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) water industry for significant contributions to sustainability through various initiatives, projects and programmes throughout the region.

The company was presented with the award in recognition of its pioneering EPIC (Environmental Passive Integrated Chamber) technology, which has the capacity to save up to 85% more water than traditional irrigation systems. The innovative chamber is positioned below the surface, and is completely non-pressurised, allowing water to rise up to plant roots via capillary action after being filtered through sand. Lined with EPDM (a waterproof rubber liner), there is no loss to the ground and virtually no evaporation, allowing plants to have a constant source of water.

“We are honoured to have won this award as it is a recognition of the need to raise awareness around the pressing issue of water scarcity in the region,” commented Charlie Fleifel, CEO of EPIC Green Solutions, “We intend to continue our efforts in the progressive development of economically viable solutions, technologies and applications to conserve what is essentially one of our most valuable resources, particularly in the Middle East.”

The multi-faceted EPIC system provides exceptional drainage, irrigation and filtration, and acts as a water reservoir with zero waste. It has been proven that the technology is particularly suitable for use in landscaping and agriculture through several system applications in the UAE itself including one on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and a large local farm in Al Ain.

As per the latest World Development Report, the Middle East’s per capita water availability is expected to halve by 2050, particularly due to the region’s lack of water storage options and its ever-increasing requirement in agriculture, which accounts for approximately 80% of the region’s water use.

“Clearly there is a necessity to save and efficiently use what limited supply of water is available to us,” concluded Bart Rehbein, Managing Director of EPIC Green Solutions, “Our aim is to offer companies water management tools that are easy to use, enable them to maximise returns on investment and which require virtually no maintenance even in the long term, while allowing them to be environmentally conscious.”
