The annual Middle East Architect Awards, renowned as the benchmark of success in the Middle East’s architectural sector, has recognised King’s upcoming Dubai-based hospital as a leading project, thanks to its architectural merit. Conceptualised by King’s appointed architects Perkins + Will, the state of the art facility has been shortlisted for this year’s Award, with the highly anticipated winner to be announced at an industry wide ceremony on Wednesday 22nd November, 2017.

Now in its 10th year, the Awards bring together the very best in projects from the region, including key markets such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The range of shortlisted entrants in this year’s edition is fierce and will be scrutinised by an expert panel of judges. King’s competition within the Award category includes a prestigious research centre, a university, a school and a corporate headquarters.

King’s state of the art 100-bed hospital, centrally located in Dubai, has a façade that reinterprets the shading effect generated by the textured landscape of windblown sand. Abstracted as an architectural expression, this texture wraps the hospital and gives it a patterned articulation to provide self-shading, cleverly designed to minimise direct solar exposure much needed in Dubai’s hot, sunny climate.

The architects have also positioned the hospital to be visually prominent from the main road, with easy wayfinding for visitor and patients, giving the facility pride of place within its community. The hospital, currently under construction, is located in a plot at the heart of the premium development of ‘Dubai Hills’, and will serve a vast catchment area, with King’s three other UAE based clinics and medical centers feeding into it.

The hospital’s launch will follow in the footsteps of three UAE-based medical centres. Two of the centres are located in Dubai (one launched in September this year, the other will launch by the end of 2018) and one in Abu Dhabi (the brand’s flagship medical and surgical centre that launched in 2014). Once all facilities are operational, come 2019, King’s will be serving a catchment area of hundreds of thousands of patients every year. In addition, it will further create jobs for UAE based healthcare professionals (HCP’s) as well as for international doctors wishing to come to the UAE and be part of King’s expanding footprint. World leading experts from King’s UK and its partner hospitals, such as Professor Nigel Heaton, Dr. Marco Sinisi and Dr. Bu Hayee, will also be visiting patients in the UAE every 4-6 weeks as part of a unique ‘London Faculty Programme’.

With King’s CEO Neil Buckley, at the helm of the brands UAE expansion, King’s state of the art facilities, world-leading expertise and best of British healthcare is poised to be a top local healthcare provider of choice. King’s facilities are set to enhance patient journeys across more than ten specialties including paediatrics, foetal medicine, diabetes, and endocrinology.
