Obelux introduces a battery-free, solar powered LED obstacle light system.

Finland based Obelux Oy has developed a revolutionary, fully maintenance-free, solar powered LED aviation obstacle light system. Aviation obstacle lights are used for high constructions to point out and mark obstacles for air traffic. Often, these obstacles are installed in remote districts, and thus solar power is the only reasonable power source as a grid connection is not available.

Traditionally, these solar systems contain large lead-acid batteries which need to be replaced every 3-5 years, even though the system would have a life-time more than 15 years. These battery changes generate high maintenance costs, particularly in remote districts. In addition, these lead-acid batteries have a negative impact to the environment, and need to be recycled with an extra care.

The maintenance-free operating time of the new Obelux system is in a league of its own. Amazingly, there are not any batteries to replace. Energy is stored in super capacitors which have an expected life-time of over 15 years. The controller, charger, and super capacitors are all integrated into one cabinet making the system compact and easy to install.

In addition, these super capacitors are not affected by variations in ambient temperature, which increases the reliability and life-time of the system compared to traditional solutions. Hence, the system’s total cost of ownership is remarkably decreased.

Obelux Oy drives for environmental friendly, maintenance-free, low power consumption, and long life-time products in all its research. The personnel are highly motivated and skilled to carry out constant research of the latest developments in LED lighting technology. “We always pursue to set new standards for the industry in terms of low power consumption and long life-time of the systems”, says Jyrki Sipinen, General Manager, Obelux Oy.

Obelux’s new innovation will be on the market in the first quarter of 2012 and it will meet both international ICAO’s and FAA’s regulations.
