Electricity supply is one of the main requirements of any data processing center. Electricity keeps the system functioning and therefore the supply must be secure and uninterrupted.

To prevent errors from occurring (essential in all data processing and storage activities) an emergency supply must also be guaranteed to ensure that the system can remain active in the event of grid failure.

HIMOINSA, a company dedicated to power generation, specialising in the manufacture and marketing of generation sets, designs electric generators that provide an uninterrupted and emergency power supply to meet the needs of the most demanding market segments, such as telecommunications and data centers.

Supplying secure energy to key data centers

THE MOST IMPORTANT DATA CENTER IN LATIN AMERICA

Objectives
The Latin American Data Center market has developed significantly over the past two years. Although this market started to take off in 2008, the large projects in Latin America did not get underway until 2011, when Telconet built a large Data Center with capacity to ensure an interconnection within Ecuador, from Quito and Guayaquil to the outside world through the NAP of the Americas. The center has high connection speeds and offers coverage to multiple national and international telecommunications operators.

HIMOINSA’s mission in this key project was to supply the emergency power system to provide Ecuador with safe and reliable specialised data centers where companies can house their servers.

The Challenge
The project stands out for the extremely high security measures taken to ensure a secure, uninterrupted power supply. Telconet Cloud Center falls into the TIER IV category (capacity for 400 racks), implying a margin of error which is almost zero. It is the first TIER IV classified data center in Latin America. HIMOINSA has provided a power system with HMW-810 T6 generation sets under 2N+1 configuration, involving the installation of 24 soundproofed units (12 generator in each center) in a 20 inch container, with MTU engines for operation in parallel with load sharing.

Project Specifications
Given the demand for high-availability sites for companies to house their servers, Telconet Cloud Center is considering building two data centers: Telconet Cloud Center I, in Guayaquil (TIER IV category and capacity for 400 racks) and Telconet Cloud Center II in Quito (TIER III category and capacity for 360 racks). To provide an optimum emergency power supply in these facilities, measuring 1000 m2 and 900 m2 respectively, emergency generator sets have had to be installed.

Benefits
Through this project, HIMOINSA’s generator sets ensure the continuity of supply, reducing the margin of error to zero in the event of a power failure in the main grid. The Telconet Data Center offers housing services (shared housing, hiring of closed cabinet space) and hosting services (virtual servers in a data center with advanced security, surveillance and fire-protection technology in place) to any company requiring them. These data centers, which comply with TIA 942-2 and Uptime Institute regulations, are undoubtedly the largest and most advanced in Ecuador.

Why HIMOINSA
“From the very beginning, we wanted to select the best offer on the market. We chose HIMOINSA from a group of different internationally-recognised generator set manufacturers because of its outstanding reputation, quality and reliability. With its cutting-edge technology and capacity for constant innovation, this power multinational has amply met all the technical expectations required for a project of this type. The technical support provided by its local supplier, FECORSA, also stands out”.
