Serco was pronounced winner of the Public Transport Operator of the Year award at the London Transport Awards last week, for its operation of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Beating stiff competition for the award including shortlisted operators c2c and London United Busways, Serco was chosen based on its exceptional performance, record reliability levels and implementation of new initiatives.

Serco has previously won six consecutive awards from the National Rail Awards for its operation of the DLR, including an ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award in September 2005. The award comes shortly after Serco has signed a new seven year Docklands Light Railway contract scheduled to start on 28 May. The deal may be extended for a further two years and is valued at around AED2.5 Billion over this lengthened period.

Features of the new DLR franchise include increased frequency of train services, high reliability targets, new ‘Travel Safe Officers’, increased staff presences at key stations, two-way television help points on stations and upgraded CCTV. In the Middle East, Serco has been invited by the UAE Roads and Transport Authority to tender for the Dubai Metro Transport Operations and Maintenance contract.

Stuart Burdess, Managing Director of the Serco Dubai Metro Project Team, said “We are delighted that Serco has won this award which is a measure of our continuing dedication to delivering leading public services.” Serco aims to bring these international best practices and expertise to the Middle East where they are expanding their transport capabilities following a 50-year history of providing operational and maintenance services in the UAE. “We are committed to supporting the region’s dynamic growth and are excited to have been asked to participate in the Dubai Metro contract. We consider it an honour to be able to take part in the development of Dubai and this pioneering project,” stated Burdess.
