Promat, which is a global leader in passive fire protection, says the acquisition will widen its product range and its geographical reach. Cafco has built a worldwide reputation for market-leading products in the field of sprayed solutions for structural fire protection, high temperature insulation, industrial applications and tunnel fire protection which will complement Promat's existing brands.

“This acquisition fits in well with Promat’s strategy of diversification and growth within the field of passive fire protection and high temperature insulation,” says John Stevenson, managing director of Promat's British operation, Promat UK Limited. “The inclusion of Cafco International in the Promat portfolio will provide strong synergies in product development, and facilitate further geographical expansion worldwide,” he adds.

Stringent regulations and growing demands from insurers mean fire protection is not an area where specifiers can afford to take a chance. Load-bearing columns, beams and floors must be fire-resistant: unprotected steelwork quickly loses its loadbearing capacity during a fire.

Passive fire protection is part of the building fabric and may include fire compartments and barriers as well as the protection of structural steelwork. These Promat passive fire protection systems are fit-and-forget and can control the course of a fire and limit damage. It gives occupants the time to escape and firefighters the chance to save the building.

Promat is the UK’s only one-stop shop for passive fire protection and offers a choice of solutions to satisfy completely the requirements of insurers and regulators. Its leading brands include high performance Supalux and Vermiculux calcium silicate boards, and Durasteel, a steel-faced fire barrier. These products have been tried and tested on some of the biggest names in the building industry including the new Broadgate Tower in the City of London, the Ministry of Defence, the London Underground, Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and The Palm Development in Dubai.

Cafco has more than 35 year’s experience in passive fire protection. It manufacturers a range of products from gypsum and cement-based vermiculite sprays, to board systems and intumescent coatings. Over the years these products have protected more than 30-million m2 of building structures.

Recent projects include work on the new hangar at Kuala Lumpur’s Sepang International Airport, built for the A380, the world’s largest passenger jet. Cafco also provided fire protection coating on the world’s tallest hotel, the 33-metre high Rose Rotana suites in Dubai. Cafco has operations in the UK, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the UAE and has licensed manufacturers across the Far East.

“The Cafco brand is highly respected and the acquisition brings together two of the key companies who drive and shape the fire protection industry around the world,” says John Stevenson.

Cafco managing director David Hay adds: “We’re looking forward to joining Promat. We’re both leaders in the market; together we’re offering an unbeatable line-up of high performance products and technical expertise.”
