His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi, Head of the Finance and Administration Department of Sharjah, and His Excellency Salim Bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Municipality and Agriculture, and Chairman of Bee’ah, The Sharjah Environment Company, last week toured the Al Saja’a waste management site with Emirates Environmental Technology (EET) Co. LLC, the site operators, and Mr. Saeed Al Mazemi, Landfill Coordinator of the Solid Waste Department, Sharjah Municipality.

Sheikh Mohammed and Chairman Al Owais viewed the entire landfill site together with the new cells being developed to enable recycling of waste into reusable material and safe disposal of other materials.

Additionally, Sheikh Mohammed and Chairman Al Owais met with representatives of Bee’ah and EET, who will be working together to operate the site even more efficiently in the future. EET explained in detail the issues facing Al Saja’a, which includes the sheer volume of waste delivered every day that reaches up to: 3,000 tons from municipal solid waste (generated from household sources); 16,000 tons from construction and demolition waste (CDW); and 1,000 tons from industrial waste.

“We are now at a stage where we have established strong partnerships with several companies that specialize in different areas of recycling and managing waste, one of which is Emirates Environmental Technology (EET) – represented today by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi. After touring the Al Saja’a site, we concluded that the operations are being conducted smoothly and that all the equipment required for effective operations to continue will arrive within the next six months. We also agreed that the accumulated waste mountains in the site will be eliminated by March this year,” said Mr. Al Owais at the end of the visit.

Mr. Reinhard Göschl, General Director of EET added, “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to demonstrate the positive changes that have already been made to operations at Al Saja’a, and to be given the full support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Chairman Al Owais. We are also very pleased to know that the expertise of Bee’ah will allow us to further improve the vital service provided to the people of Sharjah. All of us here today are absolutely committed to pursuing the vision we have: for Al Saja’a to become a world-class waste facility with high rates of recycling and advanced waste disposal features.”

Al Saja’a is located near the Sharjah Airport road and is one of the world’s largest waste management sites with a total capacity of approximately 25 million cubic meters. The volume of waste arriving at the site from the Emirate of Sharjah grows by around 14 percent every year. Consequently, the site requires new methods and techniques to be employed in order for it to continue to serve the people of Sharjah effectively.

“We are working hard to resolve the issues faced with hazardous medical waste, municipal solid waste and industrial waste. Moreover, we have already initiated additional operations in the Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) area with plans to tackle this problem at an even deeper level in the coming stages,” Mr. Al Owais added.

Samer Kamal, Managing Director of Bee’ah, The Sharjah Environment Company commented, “This tour of one of the world’s largest landfill facilities highlighted the issues facing the emirate, people and municipality. It also demonstrated how seriously all parties involved – the Municipality of Sharjah, Bee’ah and EET – are taking the task of identifying the most effective and environmentally-sound solutions to these issues and implementing them at the earliest opportunity.”

Bee’ah will be working in cooperation with EET, ensuring that the environmental expertise of Bee’ah and the operational proficiency of EET are used together to provide a world-class waste management facility that recycles as much waste as possible, and disposes of non-recyclable waste in the most efficient, safe and environmentally-sensitive ways.

HH Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi concluded the visit by saying: “I would like to thank HE Salim Al Owais for today’s visit that is of the utmost importance to the Emirate of Sharjah, and through which we will reinforce the operations of this vital project. After all, we are working together to achieve what is in the best interests of the Emirate of Sharjah and the public health of its residents. We are certain that all the involved parties work in this as one team in order to face these environmental issues.”

Bee’ah is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Environmental Company, founded in 2007, operating in the Emirate of Sharjah. The primary mission of Bee’ah is to help transform Sharjah into a ‘green’ Emirate with sustainable environmental best practices, providing fully integrated environmental strategic solutions and services for commercial, industrial and residential groups.

EET provides solutions to the waste management problems of cities, districts, companies, and private individuals. In Sharjah, its activities include the coordination, design and operation of facilities that treat all types of waste, as well as the world’s largest land reclamation project that will see 4.5 million cubic meters of waste remediated in just two years. EET also maintains a number of high-profile ventures in other countries and emirates, including a recycling and sorting plant in Al Ain, which the company has designed, installed and erected and will manage for the next 10 years.
