Palm Utilities (PU), the water and district cooling utility services provider established by government-owned investment firm Istithmar, a major investment holding and part of the Dubai World group of companies, was launched Monday, April 7, 2008 to provide world-class utility services to Dubai World Group developments and other global clients, at a press conference held at Madinat Jumeirah.

Palm Utilities consists of two utility companies: Palm Water (PW), which has been providing utility services for various large-scale developments in Dubai; and Palm District Cooling (PDC), which is recognised as one of the world's leading district cooling utility companies. Palm Utilities, created as the holding group for PDC and PW, unifies the two utility companies by integrating their varied products and services to offer a fully packaged utility portfolio.

Ahmed Butti, Chairman, Palm Utilities, said: “Palm Utilities has been established as an initiative to complement the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, regarding the improvement of our utility infrastructure while at the same time maintaining the wellbeing of our environment.”

"Palm Utilities will contribute to the centralisation and modernisation of the delivery of fundamental utility services to Dubai and the rest of the UAE, as utility services are essential elements in the socioeconomic development of our country. Moreover, it is our ultimate aim to expand our business activities beyond the rapidly growing UAE market and be able to establish a strong presence in other high-potential areas around the world," added Mr. Butti.

Keith Levers, Chief Executive Officer, Palm Utilities commented, “We are proud to be one of the Dubai World’s firms and our utility services are not limited to the Group only; we look forward to conducting businesses on a global basis as there is a huge demand for district cooling, portable water, waste water treatment and water recycling. We intend to increase our share in these rapidly growing markets.”

PDC and PW jointly provide utility services to some of the most important development projects in Dubai. PDC is already providing district cooling service (chilled water) to a significant number of prestigious developments, including Gardens Residential Complex (25,000 TR), Jumeirah Islands (15,000 TR), Discovery Gardens (126,000 TR) and Palm Jumeirah Trunk (126,000 TR).

PDC is also working on several other projects, which are at various stages of construction like The Jumeirah Lake Towers (167,000 TR), Palm Jumeirah Crescent (124,000 TR), Jumeirah Village South (255,000 TR), Palm Jebel Ali (490,000 TR), International City (310,000 TR), Dubai Maritime City (122,000 tonnes) and the three phases of Dubai Waterfront (632,000 tons). In 2005, PDC raised its cooling capacity to 550,000 tonnes and is again poised to increase production to 1.8 million tonnes by 2010 as a result of strong market demand.

PW offers an entire spectrum of water products and services, including potable, polished, and irrigation water production; sewage and wastewater treatment, recycling and collection; and water distribution. Among the prime projects being handled by PW are The Palm Jumeirah Crescent desalination plant (64,000 m3/day); trunk and crescent sewage treatment plants utilising MBR technology (35,000 m3/day); TSE polishing plant (18,000 m3/day); the JAFZA Utility project (desalination capacity 100,000 m3/day; MBR sewage treatment plant of 112,000 m3/day capacity; TSE Polishing Plant of 60,000 m3/day capacity; and various services for the World Islands Project.
