Bayer MaterialScience, one of the world’s largest polymer companies, is showcasing innovative sustainable construction solutions at The Big 5, the international building and construction show, at the Dubai World Trade Centre from November 22 to 25, 2010. Together with its regional polyurethane systems house joint venture BaySystems Pearl, Bayer MaterialScience exhibits on stand P123 of the German pavilion, located in Zabeel Hall.

Bayer MaterialScience has a specialised roster of innovative materials for construction solutions that complement the ‘green building’ vision of the Gulf region. The company has already formed strong partnerships with leading developers to drive their sustainable construction requirements and is also a member of the Emirates Green Building Council.

The introduction of materials suited for sustainable construction solutions by Bayer MaterialScience is expected to further strengthen the efforts of the regional governments in managing the high per capita ecological footprint. According to the recent WWF Living Planet Report 2010, three Gulf Coopertation Council (GCC) nations are in the top ten list of nations with the highest ecological per capita footprint in the world.

The UAE, among other GCC nations, has outlined clear guidelines to make buildings more energy and water use efficient, as part of the ‘green vision’ outlined by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

“Cost-effective widespread implementation of green buildings is a key challenge faced by regional governments and the private sector as they embark on ambitious infrastructure development programs in the face of rapid urbanization and ever higher demands placed on sustainability,” says Dr. Thomas Braig, head of the EcoCommercial Building Program in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Bayer MaterialScience.

He added: “The Middle East is one of our key markets, especially with the region’s emphasis on infrastructure development. Our solutions will help decision makers in the public and private sector implement sustainable construction projects to cement the region’s pole position in green city planning.”

Thermal insulation based on rigid polyurethane foam is a core element of Bayer MaterialScience sustainable solutions. BaySystems Pearl, Dubai-based Bayer MaterialScience’s joint venture system house, has built up several years of wide-ranging experience in this area and works closely with customers to develop customized system solutions based on rigid polyurethane foam. This material is among the best products currently available on the market in terms of thermal insulating properties. It is used to insulate buildings, warehouses and pipe networks, as well as having applications in the refrigeration chain. “BaySystems Pearl can call on the expertise of the global Bayer MaterialScience systems house network and take advantage of the cutting-edge technology that it offers. This means we can implement customer requirements quickly and with outstanding flexibility,” explains Feroz Saleem, Managing Director of BaySystems Pearl.

In addition to specialised materials and solutions developed for the construction sector, Bayer MaterialScience is also an official partner of the Solar Impulse project; the world’s first airplane aiming to fly night and day around the world only propelled by solar energy.
