With the Middle East region’s only trade and networking event for the lighting design and technology industries taking place in under two weeks, there is great interest in the event being generated among lighting product manufacturers, designers, architects and developers.

Light Middlle East 2011, which will run from September 12 to 14 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, is set to turn the spotlight on the latest trends and developments that are currently impacting the worldwide industry and highlight the range and scope of the Middle East market. The trade fair and conference will be inaugurated by the UAE Minister for Economy, HE Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori.

“Going by current trends in the region, there is a lot of interest in the latest developments in the lighting design and tech-nology fields, especially with regard to its impact on the environment and potential for energy and cost savings,” said Ahmed Pauwels, Chief Executive Officer of organiser Epoc Messe Frankfurt. “The global lighting market is currently going through tremendous changes. Increased efficiency standards, a growing concern with energy efficiency and breakthroughs in the LED sector are all factors that are affecting the market,“ he added.

These trends are underlined in the latest analysis from IMS Research, which indicated that the world lighting market in 2010 was worth $83 billion, with lamps making up 24% of the total. By 2015, the value of the market will surge to $115 billion, with lamps making up 33% of the total (IMS Research Report).

According to the findings, this market growth is driven by advancements in LED technology, which are increasing their efficiency, while decreasing their overall price. Currently, LEDs make up 10% of the total lighting market but by 2015, this is expected to increase to 46%.

The trend towards utilising LED and CFL technology as a greener alternative is being increasingly seen in many of the large-scale infrastructure projects in the region such as the Yas Hotel and Marina, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the upcoming Dubai Waterfront. Experts estimate that GCC countries could save as much as US$ 400 million in energy bills and 5.1 megatonnes of CO2 emissions annually by switching to LED lighting technology (LED lighting to save GCC millions - Construction Week).

Some of the prominent exhibitors showcasing their range in the latest technologies will be GE Lighting, Ruud Lighting Arabia, Thorn and Zumtobel brands from The Zumtobel Group, Future Electronics, who hold an exclusive worldwide agreement with Philips Lumileds, Schreder Gulf LLC and OSRAM.

Light Middle East 2011 will also feature a comprehensive programme of conferences and workshops. The interactive forums and instructional workshops and seminars have been proving increasingly popular over the years with lighting industry professionals, designers and consultants from the Middle East.

The three-day programme, which includes Green Middle East, Light Insight Arabia Conference, a Lighting Masterclass and an Introduction to Lighting Workshop, will highlight modern trends in lighting solutions, energy-efficiency, green lighting and the potential savings in costs and resources offered by the latest designs.

Each day’s programme has been tailored to address issues that impact the regional industry and is designed to benefit lighting designers and consultants, architects, government officials, engineers, developers, system solution providers and lighting suppliers. The programmes are being organised in association with Sesam Business Consultants and the Professional Lighting Designers’ Association (PLDA) and enjoy the support of RUUD Lighting Arabia, OSRAM, Zumtobel and Schreder Gulf LLC.

Additionally, a new feature at Light Middle East is the Best in Class lighting competition sponsored by General Electric. A selection of graduating students will show creative solutions in two different competition categories: façade lighting and energy saving lighting products. The best designs will be presented at Light Middle East with the prize to include a visit to Light+Building, Frankfurt next April.
