Solar energy in the spotlight at Wetex 2012.

The 14th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2012 will put solar energy in the spotlight, with displays by companies showcasing the latest renewable technologies and seminars, led by international energy experts from across the sector.

The focus on solar energy technologies at WETEX 2012 stems from the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and his directives towards building a sustainable future for the Emirate of Dubai.

Dubai Supreme Council of Energy recently (DSCE) launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, a pioneering project adopted by the Council and managed and operated by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The first stage of this project involves building a 10MW power plant that uses Photovoltaic technology.

(DSCE) will have a pavilion at WETEX 2012 that will display detailed information about this project as well as a model of it. Visitors can look closely at the frameworks, policies and all project-related information. This project is of great importance, as it is the first of its kind in terms of production capacity, and it is at the forefront of promising projects that will use renewable sources of energy to generate electricity in Dubai.

Best-available technologies will be employed to make optimal use of the all-year-round sunshine. Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 includes a plan to diversify energy sources, so that renewable sources of energy provide 1% of Dubai’s total energy output by 2020. By 2030, this will increase to 5%, with 12% coming from nuclear energy, 12% from clean coal and the remaining percentage from gas.

WETEX 2012 will also see participation from exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in manufacturing improvements to increase the efficiency of solar energy cells, and demonstrations on how technology is helping to manage demand for electricity in fast-growing solar markets such as Europe, America and China.

“Solar energy is a completely-renewable and sustainable form of energy with many environmental advantages, such as the reduction in CO2 emissions,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA.

“Throughout WETEX 2012, we will review the future of solar energy as well as global best practices in the field of renewable energy. Also, organizing an exhibition such as WETEX, which is one of the leading exhibitions in the field of energy in the Emirate of Dubai, makes this an excellent opportunity to discuss the importance of making use of renewable energy and the best ways to expand their use to meet our energy needs, while also protecting our environment from pollution."

WETEX 2012 will bring together industry professionals from different scientific and management solutions, engineering and technological quarters with the purpose of showcasing the latest innovations in the solar energy market, as well as additional renewable energy sources. The WETEX exhibition will shed light on the latest developments in the solar sector that are relevant to both the residential and commercial sectors and highlight available technologies for large-scale investments in commercial buildings.

WETEX 2012 will take place from the 13th to 15th of March in Zabeel Hall and Halls 1, 2, 3 and 4, at The Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The exhibition is open to the general public.
