The Siemens Student Award 2011 receives 630 idea submissions from over 400 universities across the Middle East.

Launched in May 2011, the Siemens Student Award 2011 is seeking the best answers to one of the world’s toughest questions, “How can you build sustainable cities in the desert?” Students from over 400 universities across the Middle East, including Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan, have participated.
Siemens Student Award experts and online community members will select ten finalists from the 630 submitted entries. Three winners will then be announced at an awards ceremony on 01 November 2011 in Doha, Qatar. Winners will take home a share of USD 45,000 in prize money and will be offered internship opportunities at Siemens.
The call for outstanding ideas from the best and brightest minds currently studying at Middle Eastern universities resulted in the Siemens Student Award 2011 receiving an overwhelming 630 submitted ideas. The contest engages students from accredited universities in the region to seek the best answers to the world’s toughest questions related to four megatrends: Demographic Change, Climate Change, Urbanization, and Globalization.
Patron of the Siemens Student Award, Erich Kaeser, CEO, Siemens Middle East, stated: “The response has been outstanding. In just two months, more than 20,000 people visited the dedicated Siemens Student Award website and over 8,500 registered as a community member. The high calibre of ideas submitted by students from all Middle East countries is a reflection of the promising intellectual capital right across the region.”
The award website has enabled an extensive online community to be established. As well as facilitating entries, the platform fully engages students and it provides them with the opportunity to share and discuss ideas.
Submissions will be evaluated by a council of Siemens Student Award experts along with the online community in the following weeks in order to select 10 finalists from the 630 ideas.
The ten finalists will then move forward to the final round of evaluation by a jury of high-profile individuals from institutions and organisations that are significantly involved with sustainability initiatives.
The jury includes Asya Al Ashaikh, Founder and CEO of Tamkeen Sustainability Advisors, Saudi Arabia; Dr. Ashraf Gamal, Executive Director, Egyptian Institute of Directors, Egypt; Alan Geoffrey Frost, Director, Masdar City, UAE; Shafqat Kkakakhel, Member Advisory Committee, Ministry of Environment, Pakistan; and Dr. Christian Urbanke, Siemens Corporate Technology, Siemens AG, Germany.
An award ceremony will be held on 01 November 2011 in Doha, Qatar; where three winners will be announced. The total cash award amounts to USD 45,000; the winner will receive USD 25,000, while two runners-up will receive USD 15,000 and USD 5,000 respectively. All winners will be offered internship opportunities with Siemens.
As knowledge transfer and building local talent has always been at the heart of Siemens commitment to the region, this award is a demonstration of Siemens encouragement of knowledge exchange, innovative thinking, and building local talent that shapes the future.
