In the early 1950s, Gommern became the centre of the natural gas/crude oil industry in the former East Germany. Some of the companies located there today have a long tradition in this sector.

Barth Gommern Behälter-, Apparate-, und Tankbau GmbH -- now known as BAGOM Industrie GmbH -- has been developing and manufacturing liquid gas tanks to established international standards since 1994. Substantial innovations in this field, such as the BAGOM Safety Process, the ASS Anti-Heave System and the new type of coating technology known as DUOFLEX have all helped to make BAGOM Industrie GmbH the market leader in Germany. In other countries too, demand is expanding at a gratifying rate. The company's workforce has swelled to more than 75 employees.
