DEWA awards M-Station power production and desalination plant expansion project to Siemens

In line the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and Dubai Strategic Plan, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has announced that DEWA has awarded a contract to expand its M-Station power production and desalination plant to Siemens, at a total cost of AED 1.47 billion. Mott MacDonald was earlier appointed consultant for the project, which will be completed and delivered by 30 April 2018. The expansion project supports DEWA’s strategies and plans to meet the overall development needs of electricity and water.

“The M-Station, built at a cost of AED 10 billion, is the newest and largest power production and desalination plant in the UAE, with a total capacity of 2,060 MW of electricity and 140 million imperial gallons of water per day. The station adopts the highest levels of availability, reliability, and efficiency, using the most advanced technologies in the world. DEWA enhances the efficiency and capacity of the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity and water networks to meet the needs of consumers, developers and other business sectors to meet the growing demand for power in Dubai. The M-Station is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technological systems,” said Al Tayer.

“The expansion project includes new power generation units with a capacity of 700 MW to be added to the current capacity of the station to eventually produce 2,700 MW by 2018. The expansion project includes adding two gas turbine generators, two heat recovery steam turbine generators, and one back pressure steam turbine. This will increase the plant’s thermal efficiency from 82.4% to 85.8%, which is considered among the highest thermal efficiency rates in the world,” added Al Tayer.

“The Jebel Ali power station complex, which includes the M-Station is one of the main pillars that enable DEWA to provide Dubai with a very reliable, efficient and high quality electricity and water supply. DEWA works tirelessly to enhance its installed capacity, which is currently 9,656 MW of electricity and 470 million imperial gallons of desalinated water per day. After completing this station, DEWA’s installed capacity will reach 10,356 MW of electricity,” concluded Al Tayer.
