Middle School opens at Tintern, Australia featuring Kalwall Vertikal

The design aligns with the School’s pedagogy of ‘Parallel Learning’ that separates girls and boys in Years 7, 8 and 9, with delivery of a tailored curriculum to each gender. The plan joins two wings of classrooms with a staff ‘bridge’, so that staff can access each wing from their office bridge, but boys and girls remain separate.

Translucent, insulated wall panels achieve high thermal performance, energy efficiencies and code compliance – permitting soft natural light to enter each classroom on two sides, yet maintaining privacy between the girls’ and boys’ buildings. A 10 metre cantilever, at the end of each wing, contains a classroom that, in effect, floats within a Vierendeel truss. The under croft formed by the cantilever maximises the ground plane for permeability and provides all year round, sheltered play-space.

The school is delighted with the result and Architectus congratulates all who worked on this innovative project.
