The international construction show, gearing up for its third edition later this year, has taken the prize for ‘Green Corporate Event’ at the 4th annual Qatar Sustainability Awards.
Held by Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), the Qatar Sustainability Awards is one of the first and largest awards events in Qatar that honour the efforts, commitment and excellence of people, institutions and organisations in furthering sustainable development environmental protection in Qatar and beyond.
Taking home the prize within the ‘Green Events’ category at the 4th annual awards gala dinner, The Big 5 Construct Qatar has been recognized both for being an environmentally conscious event, as well as for making the sustainability agenda more accessible to Qatar’s construction professionals.
Eng Meshal al Shamari, Director of QGBC said: “The awards are about recognizing the efforts of our partners and stakeholders in driving and achieving sustainable development in Qatar. The events and tourism industry is growing rapidly in Qatar and QGBC is keen to work on mitigating the negative impact of this growth on the environment. Therefore, we are very pleased with the steps DMG have taken to deliver such an environmentally conscious event.”
Loubna Aghzafi, Country Manager at event organiser dmg events Doha commented: “We are honoured to win the ‘Green Corporate Event’ prize at the prestigious Qatar Sustainability Awards. The steps taken in the 2019 edition have stimulated big momentum for standardising sustainability across our event. We will continue to do our part to ensure there are appropriate checks, with the ultimate goal of reducing and one-day eliminating waste. The work will be carried out in conjunction with the Qatar Green Building Council in view of reducing our foot print across all our events.
She concluded: “The success of our own ‘Green Agenda’ would not have been possible without support and collaboration from the Qatar National Tourism Council, the Qatar Green Building Council, the DECC, all our partners & sponsors, our exhibitors and our local suppliers.”
Aside from saving half a million pages of paper by going electronic with their show catalogue in 2019, The Big 5 Construct Qatar also worked to reduce waste by implementing reusable building materials for exhibitor and workshop stands, and by replacing plastic bottles and paper cups in common areas with water machines and glasses.
Initiatives taken to encourage sustainable approaches in the construction sector itself included free CPD certified ‘Sustainability’ workshops focused on planning and applying smarter, more sustainable processes in the construction sector, and the distribution of an exclusive digital report titled ‘5 Ways to Improve your Green Credentials’.
Bringing the world of construction to Qatar, The Big 5 Construct Qatar will continue to boost the local construction sector with three days of face-to-face business, networking and learning opportunities from 13 – 15 October 2020 at the Doha Exhibition and Conference Center.
The Big 5 Construct Qatar is organised by dmg events Doha, and is supported by Official Strategic Partner Qatar National Tourism Council.
