Saudi Arabia continues to be the dominant force in the GCC’s building and construction sector, with an estimated US$627 billion worth of ongoing projects, according to research from Zawya Projects commissioned by The Big 5 Saudi.

The growth of The Big 5 Saudi 2013, which will bring together more than 550 exhibitors from over 36 countries, is evident from it having doubled in size since its launch in February 2011. Held under the patronage of Jeddah Municipality Mayor Dr. Hani Mohammad Aburas, the event will fill the entire venue at the Jeddah Centre for Forums and Events from 9-12 March, as well as outdoor space, an increase from the one hall that was filled at the inaugural event.

More than 60 per cent of participants at The Big 5 2013 are international, with more than 36 countries are represented at this year’s event, including Italy, Germany, France, Greece, UK and USA. Exhibitors bring a wide range of products from around the work, from heavy industry to concrete and fit-out, the event is an excellent opportunity for buyers to source the very latest innovations and access cutting-edge technology, that is forwarding thinking in terms of sustainability and construction quality.

Andy White, group event director, The Big 5 Saudi, said: “We have seen phenomenal success for the event over the previous two years, and now that we have established a solid foundation for the show. The Saudi construction industry continues to present opportunities across a range of sectors and The Big 5 is designed as a platform for suppliers and buyers to connect, do business and understand the latest developments from across the industry.”

Previous years has shown that sector specific zones, such as Concrete, have proven to be popular for the facilitation of business opportunities.

Dedicated Zones

Concrete products and technologies continue to be a key sector for those working in Saudi Arabian construction, looking for solutions from around the world. In addition, the market for construction machinery in Saudi Arabia is set to grow by an estimated 30% – 35%– particularly in the Western Province, as a result of projects such as the proposed Jeddah airport extension and the huge and ambitious proposals for the redevelopment of the Holy City of Mecca.

Launched in 2012 and 25% bigger this year, the Concrete Zone offers a platform for the international and local concrete industry. Key brands such as MASA and HESS from the precast sector, Conmix from the readymix sector and Ulma Attieh with formwork, all have a significant presence along with many others.

Training

Concrete Repair Workshop

Timing: 9:00-18:00, 10 March, 2013

Led by Concrete Repair Ltd’s director, John Drewett, this workshop will provide up to date information on concrete repair and corrosion, in line with the most recent European Standards and Concrete Society Technical Reports, the work providing the opportunity to improve their ability to effectively mitigate the risk of concrete damage to improve life-cycle costs and maintain structural integrity. Participants will be shown the most reliable ways of detecting the potential risk of damage through improved monitoring, inspection and analysis and ensuring that the application and use of concrete supports effective maintenance .

Participants will be taken through the main causes for concrete deterioration and strategies for mitigating damage, utilising survey techniques to spot the early warning signs and reduce risk. Experts including Tim Thomas, of BASF Construction Chemicals, and Calvin Pynn, from Aegis ad Ahmad Abdul Qadeer, from Proceq, will be taking participants through a range of topics including a guide to good practice and cathodic protection.

The workshop will also include details on strengthening structures using FRP composites, to the standards outlined by the Concrete Society Technical Reports TR55 & TR57 for the design and installation of composite systems. In addition, there will be presentations on the specification and installation of corrosion rate monitoring probes for long term monitoring and controlling corrosion for new and existing structures. Participants will all receive a certificate to highlight their on-going commitment to development.

LEED Workshops

LEED 201 timing: 9:30-18:00, 11 March 2013
LEED 301 timing: 9:30-18:00, 12 March 2013

The LEED Workshops will not only identify the key components of the LEED Rating System and discuss the overall LEED Certification process, but will also look to combine theory with practical application, showing participants ways in which they can incorporate LEED strategies into their own business. The workshops will be divided into modules, covering topics including water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, materials and design innovation.

There will be descriptions of the intents and associated concepts of each LEED credit category, with explanations of regulations, recognitions and incentives related to these. Participants will leave with confidence in their ability to recognise successful LEED strategies and measurements for achieving credit category goals.

Mario Seneviratne, a LEED fellow and director of Green Technologies FZCO, will be the workshop facilitator, bringing with him over 34 years of sustainable engineering experience.

White concluded: “This year’s event will be the biggest to take place for the building and construction industry in Saudi Arabia. The breadth and diversity of international products is something that no other event can offer.”
