On Monday, the United Arab Emirates unveiled the world's largest desalinated water reserve in the middle of Abu Dhabi's Liwa desert. It holds 5.6 billion gallons of water and cost $435 million to build. This reservoir connects to 315 underground wells and has enough water to supply one million people with 47 gallons of water each every day for 3 months.
The construction for this project, which entails water being pumped from a coastal plant into the Liwa desert, began in 2010. As it often rains less than 10cm per year in the UAE, a large supply of freshwater is important.
